Originally uploaded by Camp Naturalist.

This is our first week of family camps where kids and there families come to camp and enjoy camp together. One of our family camp families while walking back from the beach find this eastern box turtle on camp’s maintenance road. It is a species of special concern here in michigan and is protect by state law.  This turtle looks to be a male because of it’s red colored eyes. Females have organge or brown eyes.

Some interesting fact are that females can remain fertile for up to 4 years after mating and some eastern box turtles can live to be up to 100 years old.
