Skeletonized Oak Leafs – July 9 2008

As I am walking in to work I look up and see these caterpillars skeletonizing the leafs of this Chinkapin Oak. The leaf to the right has already been finished as is only veins.

It is so interesting to see these creatures work to pick the leafs clean. I wonder how long they stay together as a group? Also what advantage is there to them staying together?
