Green Eyeshine – May 3, 2007

What is this creature looking back at me with these shining green eyes? It’s one of the 2 red fox kits that are living in the drainage pipe under the triplex driveway.

Foxes have green eyeshine. Eyeshine occurs because some animals have a tapetum lucedum(latin for bright carpet) located in the back of the eye. The tapetum lucidum is basically a mirror that causes the light to cross the eye twice, thereby increasing their ability to see in low light conditions. Animals have different colored eyeshine which can be helpful in identifying animals at night.
