Redbud Tree – April 23 2008
This tree is on the edge of the upper flat near the Sycamore lodge.
Here is another flying insect on the same white pine tree.

Walnut Eaten by Red Squirrel, originally uploaded by Camp Naturalist.
Here is a walnut that has been eaten by a red squirrel. Red squirrels tend to eat walnuts from the top down.
Fox squirrels(& gray squirrels) tend to gnaw two openings one on each side.
Flying squirrels chew 4 oval hole in the walnut to get the meat out.

I wonder why tulip popular leafs decompose at a faster rate than other leafs like oaks?
White Pine Caterpillar in Needles Fused #2, originally uploaded by Camp Naturalist.
Inside these 2 clusters of white pine needles are little green caterpillars. One came very quickly out the home it had made as I begin to take apart some of the needles. I don’t know what kind of insect this is?

I’m walking home to work and come upon this sycamore leaf in the grass near my house. The colors are wonderful.

I wonder what causes the different colors in this decaying tree? Is it different kinds of fungus?

Here at the base of turtle hill(turtle hill map) I spy this wafer ash seed on some bare soil. I like how the ‘wafer’ seems to be dissolving away.
I’ve read that water ash fruit has beenĀ use as a hops substitute.

At the base of this tree is where I found an owl pellet.
